Bussiness Intelligence Tools Comparison: The Hidden Side of Gartner

have you ever started talking about something, thinking it's common knowledge only to realize it really isn't? Recently I was walking in Chicago talking to friends, and I joked about Google's self-driving car. No laughs, not even a chuckle, just a quizzical look and a question, "Google car? is that a thing?" (If you don't know, Google Car is this: Test Driving the Google Car). This talk got me thinking about how I'm steeped in the tech world, I hadn't imagined anyone could not know about Google Car. It got me thinking about what pther things I think you know that you might not. So today is the day we talk a bit about Gartner and their Magic Quadrant.

2013 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms

Gartner released a new version of their Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms, and if you haven’t read it you can check it out here: Gartner 2013 Bussiness Intelligence Report.

This report is big business, it's important to remember it drives 100's of millions in corporate Business Intelligence(BI) spending, and has a hidden side to it. Although Gartner stays well away from saying it, there is a definite favorability for products from companies Gartner does business with. A quick look on Quora shows you exactly what that looks like: more time with business partners products and loosening of rules for inclusion.

That being said, the market research provided within the report is hands down the best available for free. Market size estimations and market trend analysis are particularly good.

So if you're interested in the BI market I hope you enjoy Gartners research, and with some of the knowledge about how it is built, you're ready to engage their content well.
